The book's game, with no screen

  1. Print the letter. The coloring page works well: your child colors it first, then it goes into hiding.
  2. While nobody is looking, hide it in something that starts with its sound: in a boot, inside a book, or at the bottom of a bucket.
  3. Say the sound together, as the book does: “b, b, b... Where can b be?” When your child finds it, they trace it with a finger and shout “Got you, little b!”

Good to know

b or d?

b and d are the same shape turned around, so lots of children mix them up for a while. It's part of learning, and it passes.

What helps most is the way they start. b starts with the tall line, then the round tummy. d starts with the round part, like a c, and the tall line comes second.

And a trick for reading: the word bed looks like a bed, with the b and the d as its two ends.

Questions

Grown-ups ask

How do I stop my child mixing up b and d?
Give it time, and teach the start. b starts with the tall line, then the round tummy. d starts with the round part, like a c, then the tall line. Say it while your child traces: tall line, then tummy.
How do you write a lowercase b?
Start on the top line and go straight down to the base line. Then start on that line again, halfway between the middle line and the base line, go up and round to the right, and back to the line. In our book: tall back, round tummy.
What can my child bring for letter B show and tell?
A ball, a book, a banana, a bell, a button or a bubble wand. The bath, where b hides in our book, will have to stay at home.
