The book's game, with no screen

  1. Print the letter. The coloring page works well: your child colors it first, then it goes into hiding.
  2. While nobody is looking, hide it in something that starts with its sound: under a cup, in a cupboard, or behind a cushion.
  3. Say the sound together, as the book does: “c, c, c... Where can c be?” When your child finds it, they trace it with a finger and shout “Got you, little c!”

Good to know

The letter with two sounds

c can sound hard, as in cup, cat and car. That's the same sound as k.

It can also sound soft, as in circle and city. That's the same sound as s.

For the hiding game, stick to the hard c: things that start like cup. The sound stays the same, and your child can hear it.

Questions

Grown-ups ask

What starts with C for show and tell?
A cup (our book's hiding place), a toy car, a crayon, a cap, a comb, a coin, a cookie or a paper crown. Pick things that start like cup, not like circle, so the sound stays the same.
Is c a good first letter to write?
It's a good one to start with: one movement, and no lifting the pencil. It's also the start of a, d, g and q, which all begin with the same round line.
