One line for each stroke, to read aloud while your child traces. On the sheets: the top line, the dashed middle line, and the base line, where the letters sit. If your child's school uses a different style, follow the school.
Small g
- Start at the green dot, just under the middle line on the right. Go up and round to the left, down to the base line, and back up to the dot, as for a.
- Dot 2: go straight down the right side, past the base line, and curl round to the left at the bottom.
Capital G
- Start at the green dot, just under the top line on the right. Go up and round to the left, down to the base line, round the bottom and up to the middle line. Then, without lifting the pencil, go straight in to the left.

- Say the sound together, as the book does: “g, g, g... Where can g be?” When your child finds it, they trace it with a finger and shout “Got you, little g!”

Good to know
Why does g look different in books?
In many printed books the small g has two round parts, one on top of the other, joined by a little link.
Children write the simple one: a circle, then a straight line down with a hook below the line. That is the g on our sheets and in our book.
Your child will read both and write one. Point them out side by side, so the printed g isn't a stranger.
Questions
Grown-ups ask
- How do you write a lowercase g?
- Make a circle the way you start an a. Then go straight down the right side, past the base line, and curl round to the left at the bottom. It's one of the letters that hang below the line.
- What sound does g make?
- Usually the hard sound, as in glove, goat and game. Sometimes a soft one, as in giraffe and gem, which sounds like j. For the hiding game, stick to the hard g.
- What starts with G for show and tell?
- A glove (where g hides in our book), a small game, a glue stick, goggles, grapes, a golf ball or a little gourd in the fall.
