Riddles with answers · ages 3 to 8

Riddles for kids

From easy to tricky, with every answer one tap away.

Every riddle here is a description in rhyme. An animal, or a thing in your house, talks about itself for two lines, and your child works out who or what it is. You'll find the trick questions and the puns over with the jokes.

We sorted 33 of them by age, easiest first. Tap for the answer, and under each animal there's one true thing about it.

Before you pick

Which riddles work at which age

The riddle stays the same. What changes with age is how much of it you read out.

  1. Ages 3 and 4

A riddle with a sound in it

Read both clues. The second one ends on a MOO or a QUACK, and that's the clue a 3 year old solves. Show the shadow as well. A wrong guess still counts as playing.

    Easy riddles

  2. Ages 5 and 6

    One surprising clue

Read the first clue and stop there. It holds the odd fact, like a shark that keeps growing new teeth, and your child has to reason from it. Researchers who followed children from 4 to 6 found that the ones who were good at this kind of working-out understood stories better later on.

    Riddles for kindergarten

  3. Ages 7 and 8

No second clue, and no animal

Give them the tricky animals with the first clue only. Then try the things from around the house, where a clock has a face and two hands but no nose. After that, ask them to write one for you.

Questions

Grown-ups ask

What are good riddles for 5 year olds?
Riddles about an animal they know, with a fact they don't. “I lose my teeth, but I never feel sad. New ones grow back, so it isn't so bad!” is a good first try. Read one clue, wait, and give the second clue only if they ask for it.
Do these riddles come with answers?
Every one. The answer sits behind the button under the riddle, with a picture, so you can play along without knowing it yourself.
What is a “what am I?” riddle?
It's a thing describing itself. “I've got a face and two hands, but no nose.” says the clock, and you guess. Swap the thing for an animal and people call it a “who am I?” riddle. This page has both kinds.
What is the difference between a riddle and a joke?
You can solve a riddle. Its clues are true, and a child who thinks about them can reach the answer. A joke's answer is a surprise nobody could work out, which is why “What do you call a bear with no teeth?” lives on our jokes page.
How do I use riddles with a kindergarten class?
One a day is plenty. Read the first clue when everyone is sitting down, take three or four guesses, then hold up the picture. The printable cards fold in half, so the answer stays hidden until you open them.
Can I print the riddles?
The animal riddles print as fold-over cards, six to a page, in US Letter and A4. The house and garden clues print as scavenger hunt cards. Both sets are free.
