How to write it
How to write e and E, in words
One line for each stroke, to read aloud while your child traces. On the sheets: the top line, the dashed middle line, and the base line, where the letters sit. If your child's school uses a different style, follow the school.
Small e
- Start at the green dot on the left, halfway between the middle line and the base line. Go straight across to the right. Then, without lifting the pencil, go up and round to the left, down, and round the bottom. Stop before it closes.
Capital E
- Start at the green dot on the top line. Go straight down to the base line.
- Dot 2: from the top of the line, go across the top line to the right.
- Dot 3: from the middle line, go across to the right, a little shorter.
- Dot 4: from the bottom of the line, go across the base line to the right.

- Print the letter. The coloring page works well: your child colors it first, then it goes into hiding.
- While nobody is looking, hide it in something that starts with its sound: in an empty egg box, or inside an envelope.
- Say the sound together, as the book does: “e, e, e... Where can e be?” When your child finds it, they trace it with a finger and shout “Got you, little e!”

It's also the only small letter that starts in the middle, with a straight line across, before the curl.
Questions
Grown-ups ask
- How do you write a lowercase e?
- Start on the left, halfway between the middle line and the base line, and draw a straight line across. Then, without lifting the pencil, go up and round to the left, down and round the bottom, and stop before it closes. Line first, then the curl.
- What starts with E for show and tell?
- An egg (a plastic one travels better), an egg cup, a toy elephant, an envelope, a toy train engine or an eraser. E is a tricky letter, so a short list is fine.
