How to write it

How to write d and D, in words

One line for each stroke, to read aloud while your child traces. On the sheets: the top line, the dashed middle line, and the base line, where the letters sit. If your child's school uses a different style, follow the school.

Small d

12
  1. Start at the green dot, just under the middle line on the right. Go up and round to the left, down to the base line, and back up to the dot, as for a.
  2. Dot 2, on the top line: go straight down the right side of the circle to the base line.

Capital D

12
  1. Start at the green dot on the top line. Go straight down to the base line.
  2. Dot 2: from the top of the line, go out a little to the right, then round a big curve down to the base line and back to the line.

The book's game, with no screen

  1. Print the letter. The coloring page works well: your child colors it first, then it goes into hiding.
  2. While nobody is looking, hide it in something that starts with its sound: behind a door, in a drawer, or under a doll.
  3. Say the sound together, as the book does: “d, d, d... Where can d be?” When your child finds it, they trace it with a finger and shout “Got you, little d!”

Good to know

Start round, and d faces the right way

d is b turned around, and that's why the two get mixed up.

The fix is in the first line. d starts with the round part, exactly the way c and a start, and only then the tall line. If your child starts a d with the circle, it can't come out backwards.

Questions

Grown-ups ask

How is d different from b?
They look alike, but they start differently. d starts with the round part, the same way as c and a, and the tall line comes second. b starts with the tall line.
How do you write a lowercase d?
Make a circle the way you start an a: from just under the middle line, up and round to the left and back. Then go to the top line and draw a straight line all the way down the right side.
What starts with D for show and tell?
A doll, a toy dinosaur, a drum, dice, a rubber duck, a domino, a dime or a daisy. And a drawing of your front door, for the book's hiding place.
