The book's game, with no screen

  1. Print the letter. The coloring page works well: your child colors it first, then it goes into hiding.
  2. While nobody is looking, hide it in something that starts with its sound: in a folder, under a flowerpot, or tucked into a flip-flop.
  3. Say the sound together, as the book does: “f, f, f... Where can f be?” When your child finds it, they trace it with a finger and shout “Got you, little f!”

Good to know

f or t?

Both have a line across, so they're easy to mix up.

f is tall and has a hook at the top, like the handle of a walking stick. t is shorter, with a straight top. Our book says it best: the fork's top is bent.

Questions

Grown-ups ask

How do you write a lowercase f?
Start a little under the top line on the right. Curve up and over to the left, like the handle of a walking stick, and go straight down to the base line. Then cross it on the middle line, from left to right.
Does f go below the line?
Not in the style on our sheets: f sits on the base line, like most letters. Some handwriting styles give it a tail below the line. If your child's school does that, follow the school.
What starts with F for show and tell?
A feather, a flower, a flag, a flashlight, a finger puppet, a fossil or a flip-flop. A fork too, a plastic one: that's where f hides in our book.
