The Easter Bunny came by in the night, hid the chocolate eggs, and left a trail of riddles to find them. That's the story, anyway. You're the one hiding the cards, and we've written the riddles for you.

Every clue rhymes and comes in two parts: a tricky one for big kids, and an easy one for little ones. The last card waits with the basket.

How to set up an Easter egg hunt with clues

  1. 1

    Hide the basket first. Under the kitchen table is a good spot. The last card waits with it.

  2. 2

    Pick six to eight clues. Or use our quick hunt below. Don't send them to the same room twice in a row.

  3. 3

    Hide each card where the card before it sends them. Every clue tells you where the next card goes: on the door, under the fruit, inside a slipper.

  4. 4

    Hand over the Bunny's letter and the first clue. Then stand back. Hopping is allowed.

An Easter egg hunt for toddlers

Little ones can't read the Bunny's riddles, but they can match a picture. Switch the cards to Little ones and every card shows the place it leads to, with one small word: on, under, behind, next to, inside.

With more than one child, give each of them ONE egg color. Blue eggs are for Sam, yellow for Mia. No racing, no tears, and the smallest still finds every one of hers.

  • · Four to six stops in one or two rooms.
  • · Hide eggs at their eye level, half showing.
  • · Walk the trail with them, and gasp at every find.

Spike's dinosaur egg hunt

In our book Dinosaurs Are Back, a young Triceratops called Spike wakes up to find his family's egg gone, with his baby brother Fino inside. Every dinosaur he meets gives him the next clue.

So we turned it into a hunt. Eleven cards, each from a dinosaur in the story, lead through your home to a dark cave where the treasure waits. Hide a plastic egg with a toy dinosaur inside, the Easter basket, or the book itself.

Before you start

  • · The cave: a blanket over a table, a den of cushions, or under a bed.
  • · No stairs? A row of cushions on the floor makes the long necks' bridge.
  • · No vegetables out? Put a few in a bowl for T. rex.

Before you hide anything

Safety and chocolate tips

Some clue lists hide eggs in the microwave, the oven, the dryer or the freezer. Please don't. Children have died trapped inside freezers, dryers and refrigerators, and front-loading washing machines are a known danger for small children. Our cards go on top of or next to an appliance, never inside.

  • Never inside an appliance.

    The Bunny likes the fridge door, never the inside. Same for the oven, microwave, freezer, dishwasher, dryer and washing machine.

  • Count the eggs.

    Chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Write down how many you hid and count them back in.

  • Mind the sun.

    Chocolate melts on a sunny window sill. Use plastic eggs outside and on warm spots.

  • No climbing.

    Everything at a child's height. The top of the bookcase is for grown-ups.

  • Garden hunts with a grown-up.

What are some fun Easter egg hunt clues?

How do you do an Easter egg hunt for toddlers?
Keep it short and visible. Four to six picture cards in one or two rooms, eggs half hidden at their eye level, and you right beside them. Give each child their own egg color so nobody misses out.
What are good Easter basket hunt clues?
A chain of six to eight clues where the last card waits with the basket. Our quick hunt ends under the kitchen table, where a basket fits, and the Bunny's last card says Happy Easter.
How do you make an Easter egg hunt fair for kids of different ages?
Give each child one egg color. Big kids solve the riddles and little ones follow the pictures, so everyone gets their share without a race.
Can you do an Easter egg hunt indoors?
Yes. Sixteen of our Easter clues are for inside the house, from the fridge door to the sock drawer, so a rainy Easter morning still works.
What is a dinosaur egg hunt?
