The book's game, with no screen

  1. Print the letter. The coloring page works well: your child colors it first, then it goes into hiding.
  2. While nobody is looking, hide it in something that starts with its sound: on the windowsill behind the curtain, in a toy wagon, or inside a wallet.
  3. Say the sound together, as the book does: “w, w, w... Where can w be?” When your child finds it, they trace it with a finger and shout “Got you, little w!”

Good to know

Double u, or double v?

Say its name: double u. Now look at it: it's two v's joined together.

Long ago, w was written as two u's side by side. The shape turned pointy, and the name stayed.

Why is w called double u?
Long ago it was written as two u's side by side. The shape turned pointy, but the name stayed. In French it's called double v, which matches the shape better!
