Santa's nice list

The only way onto our nice list is a kind thing, and every child can do one of those.

The certificate has room for your child's name and three kind things they did, and Santa's signature and a gold seal are already on it. Need ideas? There are 24 kind things for December below, with a calendar to print. We left the naughty list out on purpose, and further down we say why.

Made in your browser

Make a nice list certificate

Pick three kind things from our list, or write down what you saw your child do. If Santa is writing them a letter as well, he can thank them for the same three kind things.

It never leaves your device: nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else.

Three kind things

Tap three ideas or write your own. Small things count most, and a shared crayon beats a gold medal.

The kind things are never kept, so once you close the page they're gone. Only the name stays on this device, for the other Christmas makers.

One a day from December 1

24 kind things to do in December

One for every day until Christmas Eve, for ages 3 to 7. None of them cost a thing, and anything outside the house needs a grown-up along. Print the calendar for the fridge and color a star for each one you do. Every one of them can go on the certificate, too.

  1. Tuesday, December 1

Hold a door open for someone. A little bow is optional.

  2. Wednesday, December 2

Help set the table. Forks on the left, spoons wherever they like.

  3. Thursday, December 3

Draw a picture for someone who lives far away, and post it with a grown-up.

  4. Friday, December 4

Say good morning to everyone at home with your BIGGEST smile.

  5. Saturday, December 5

Share your favorite toy for a whole game. Yes, the whole game.

  6. Sunday, December 6

Make a thank-you card for someone who helps you every day.

  7. Monday, December 7

With a grown-up, put out a little bowl of water or seeds for the birds.

  8. Tuesday, December 8

Tidy up your toys before anyone asks you to.

  9. Wednesday, December 9

Tell someone one thing you love about them.

  10. Thursday, December 10

Pick a toy or a book you've grown out of, to give to another child.

Why there's no naughty list

Child development experts say a naughty list can leave little ones anxious and feeling watched, and that threats about losing presents don't change much. They suggest saying exactly what your child did, like “You let your sister go first. That was kind.” So our list only has kind things on it.

What the experts say, checked 10 Oct 2026: Care.com, experts on rethinking the naughty or nice list; TODAY, experts on Santa's naughty or nice list; Griffith University, Dr Kristyn Sommer on using Santa as a threat; American Academy of Pediatrics, HealthyChildren.org; CDC, tips for using praise.

Our own book

The Christmas Secret

A Christmas Eve picture book with a read-along · ages 3 to 7 · out on October 20

Our favorite kind thing in The Christmas Secret happens at a secret circus in the mountains. A snowman has a present that's far too heavy for him, and the girl helps him lift it before she has any idea who it's for.

In the book's words
He had a big, heavy present that he couldn't carry on his own, and he asked for my help.

Questions

Grown-ups ask

What is Santa's nice list?

In the old story, it's the list Santa keeps of every child who has been good all year. Ours is a little different. A child gets on it by doing kind things, a grown-up writes three of them on the certificate, and Santa signs it. Even the smallest child can manage one, like handing a sister her teddy.

How do you get on Santa's nice list?

By doing kind things, big or small. Sharing a toy counts, and so does a hug for someone who's sad. Our 24 kind things give you one idea for each day of December. If your child wants to tell Santa about a kind thing themselves, there's room for it in a letter to Santa.

What about the naughty list?

There isn't one here, and there's no naughty certificate to print. A list of the bad things can turn Santa into someone to be scared of, and he's much nicer as the one who notices the good things. If the naughty list is only ever a joke in your house, that's fine, and you know your child best.

When should we give the certificate?

Whenever it feels right in December. Some families give it on December 1 with the calendar, so their child starts the month already on the list. Others roll it up in the Christmas Eve box, prop it against the cookie plate, or tuck it in with a letter from Santa on Christmas morning.

My child had a hard year. Can they still be on the nice list?

Yes. Every child is on our nice list. A hard year is often a brave one, and kind things still happen in it, even tiny ones: a hug, a shared snack, letting the baby have a turn. Write those down. You can type your own line too, like "Kept trying when things were hard", because being kind to yourself counts.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The certificate is made in your browser and printed from there. The name stays on this device for the other Christmas makers, until you press Clear, and the kind things vanish when you close the page. We only count that a certificate was printed, never what it says.
