The story
Four siblings, four seasons, one snowy evening.
Somewhere in a snowy chalet, the four seasons meet for one evening. They are siblings. Summer has to stay on the balcony, because she melts by the fire. Spring has become one with the couch, bored without Fall. Winter is waiting for Fall to arrive: they only have a moment together before Winter takes over.
Fall comes in late, takes off his wet boots and warms up by the fireplace. The siblings chat and laugh all night about their adventures and the pranks they have played on each other for years. Then Fall takes a large notebook out of his bag, full of drawings and colors.
Spring is ready to laugh at it. But page by page, Fall shows them the moments he felt grateful: the warm boots a friend lent him, a hot chocolate he stopped to enjoy, and four boxes of things he is thankful for. Then the book turns to your child: what are you grateful for today?

Meet the siblings
Very different, and very close.
“It's just that everyone chooses to express themselves in a different way!” Each season has a mood of its own, and children spot them at once.

Fall
Arrives late and full of joy, in his coat with the big leaves. He keeps a notebook of the moments he felt grateful.

Spring
A bit annoyed and a little sarcastic. She gets bored when Fall is away, but she runs straight at him when he comes.

Summer
Loves the heat but melts by the fire, so she lives on the balcony. She needs Winter's snow to cool down.

Winter
Always in a rush, with a honey-cake in the oven. He has only a moment with Fall before he takes over.
Fall's notebook
“I colored my memories and the moments when I felt grateful.”
“You know, it's that feeling we get, when we pay attention to the beautiful things we have in our lives, even the days that everything seems to be black.”
Gratitude, the way a young child can hold it: not a lesson about saying thank you, but a habit of noticing. Children see Fall do it before anyone asks them to, and the page's code lets them write their own thankful things and watch them fall around the room on his leaves.

Look inside
Four double pages from the book.
Real pages, with Eleni Potamianou's watercolor pictures. Where a page has a code, we covered it here: scan it in the book.

All four together, even for a minute. Spring has become one with the couch, and runs straight at Fall.

Years of pranks: Fall sends clouds full of rain when Summer swims in the sea.

Winter goes skiing, while Spring and Summer turn up the heat behind his back.

Fall's hot chocolate: take a minute, stop everything, and just stay still.
After the story
Four ways to practice gratitude, at home or at school.
Start your own gratitude journal
Every day write 3 things for which you feel grateful.
Just pause
Take a break, look around. Do you see anything cool? Pay attention, give it some time. Can you feel grateful to have it in your life?
Write a “thank you” note
Take a piece of paper, color it and write “thank you” to someone you appreciate.
Make a family “box of gratitude”
Choose a box, or a jar.

“What do YOU think? What things are you grateful for today?”
The book asks it near the end, and leaves room to answer. A book for the days that seem gray, and for the evenings when a family has a minute to look back on the good ones.
Before you choose
Is it the right gratitude book for your child?
What parents ask, answered straight. Anything else? Write to us, one of us answers.
- What age is it for?
- 4 to 8. It is a picture book you read together, with a short paragraph on each story page. Younger children love the four siblings and their pranks; older ones get Fall's idea of looking at a day in a new way.
- Is it a Thanksgiving book?
- It is a gratitude book, and it never mentions Thanksgiving. The story happens on a snowy evening, when Fall comes home just before Winter takes over, so it fits November and the whole fall season, and it reads well any time of year. Our things to be thankful for page has Thanksgiving table questions and cards to go with it.
- How does it teach gratitude?
- Through Fall's notebook: warm boots a friend lent him, a hot drink he stopped to enjoy, four boxes of things he is thankful for. Then the book asks your child: what things are you grateful for today? Four activities follow at the back: a gratitude journal, just pause, a thank you note and a family box of gratitude.
- Does it teach the four seasons too?
- In its own way. The four siblings are the seasons, each with a mood of its own: Summer melts by the fire, Winter rushes in with the snow, Spring is bored without Fall, and Fall brings rain, wind and leaves. Our four seasons page has a chart, a wheel to spin and sorting cards with them.
- Is it a quiet book or a funny one?
- Both. Four siblings who tease each other for years (rain on Summer's beach day, a heatwave while Winter is away skiing), and quiet moments like Fall's hot chocolate. It is about the love siblings share as much as about saying thank you.
- Do we need a phone or tablet?
- Not to read it: the book works without one. The QR codes open in the camera of any recent Android or Apple phone or tablet. There is no app to install and no account to make.
- Is anything about my child kept or sent?
- No. Nothing listens to your child: no page uses the microphone. The leaves page can show your room through the camera, and the picture is never saved, recorded or sent. The child's name on the thankful board is typed on your phone or tablet and never leaves it. Only the bedtime nights ask for something: a grown-up's email address, for nights 2 to 7 (see our privacy page).
- Is it good for a classroom?
- Yes. The four seasons, a thankful tree, a gratitude jar and thank you notes all work with a group, and the sheets are free to print: a thankful tree with Fall's leaves, I am thankful for worksheets, coloring pages and a four seasons wheel.
