The book's game, with no screen

  1. Print the letter. The coloring page works well: your child colors it first, then it goes into hiding.
  2. While nobody is looking, hide it in something that starts with its sound: in the kitchen behind the kettle, or next to the keys.
  3. Say the sound together, as the book does: “k, k, k... Where can k be?” When your child finds it, they trace it with a finger and shout “Got you, little k!”

Questions

Grown-ups ask

How do you write a lowercase k?
Start on the top line and go straight down. Then start on the middle line, a little to the right, slant in until you touch the tall line, and slant out to the base line without lifting the pencil.
Does k make the same sound as c?
Often, yes: kettle and cup start with the same sound. That's why a child might spell cat with a k. It's a very good guess!
What starts with K for show and tell?
A key, a kite, a kazoo, a kaleidoscope, a kiwi or a stuffed koala. Leave the kettle, where k hides in our book, at home.
